Day 6: We went “Down East” to the much less visited part of Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula. It was a little wilder, and my favorite part of the park. Finally, we drove the billboard-free interstate back to Portland. (Maine is one of the 4 states that has outlawed billboards. The others are Vermont, Hawaii, and Alaska.)

If you’re interested in taking a similar trip, I *highly* recommend the book The Most Scenic Drives in America. It includes an excellent road map, points out particularly good state parks and museums, and explains a bit about the geology and history of the region.
